The claims that Charlotte Ashby was the first recorded Aboriginal birth on the Central Coast are not supported by the available evidence. The record cited (NSW BDM BC 1830/2470 30A) is for a child named Charlotte, no surname listed, no parents listed, in 1830.
The 1835 blanket list clarifies that the person the GuriNgai claim is Sophy (claimed by GuriNgai as the mother of Charlotte), is actually Sally, the partner of Jack Jones – not as some GuriNgai claim, Sophy, the partner of John Smith, or as other GuriNgai claim, Sophy, the victim of James Webb.
The claim that Charlotte was born as Charlotte Webb, is not supported by the available evidence.
The claims that Charlotte (no surname), Charlotte Webb, Charlotte Ashby and/or Charlotte Smith are all the same person, are not supported by the available evidence.
In 1845, Joseph Ashby applied to marry the woman who became Charlotte Ashby, listing her age as 22 years. Charlotte does not have a surname listed on the primary source document.
The claims that these Women are related to, let along directly descended from Bungaree or Matora, are not supported by the available evidence (see guriNgai.org).
Charlotte Ashby’s death certificate lists her mother as being ‘Sophia’ rather than either Sophy or Sally. In spite of this, the leadership of the GuriNgai group have gone to extraordinary lengths to create the misperception that their claimed genealogy is uncontested, certain and factual, in spite of all evidence to the contrary.
The GuriNgai claiming Aboriginal descent on the basis of sharing ancestry with the so-called ‘Ashby line’ ought to be aware of this, whether they make a living based on what they describe as Cultural knowledge and expertise, or they are simply accepting what they are told.
After 20 years of the GuriNgai passing themselves off as ‘traditional bloodline custodians’ and descendant’s of my Ancestors – all we want is for them to stop pretending to be Guringai, GuriNgai, Garigal, Wannangini, Walkaloa, Wannabee, stop pretending to be descended from my Ancestors, and stop pretending to be Aboriginal People.
The first step in undoing the immense damage the GuriNgai group have caused is for them to simply stop.
