Neil Evers has been making news once again, claiming to be Aboriginal, claiming to be an Uncle, and an Elder, and speaking as a representative of Aboriginal People.

I had been curious why Neil Evers was appearing at events run in aid of the YES campaign for Constitutional Recognition of Aboriginal People, when his pseudo-Aboriginal ‘tribe’ are fiercely advocating for the NO side. Now it makes more sense:

“In presenting an event that focused on the case for voting Yes, Chair of ASGMWP Uncle Neil Evers (image above) opened the evening with an impassioned plea to all in attendance to listen with respect to the other side of the debate.“
But who is this man who is now tarnishing The Voice campaign by his association?
Thankfully(?) Mr Evers is prolific in posting on his favorite subject matter: Neil Evers.

Mr Evers claims his parents hid his Aboriginality from him as a child in order to keep him from being stolen. Such was their caution that Mr Evers did not ‘discover’ his possible distant decent from my Aboriginal family until he was 67 years old – far beyond any reasonable expectation that the adult Neil Evers may be stolen.

Mr Evers lived a typical mundane non-Aboriginal existence, had a non-Aboriginal Family, and careers as a non-Aboriginal Cleaner, Butcher, and Massage Therapist.

Sometime around 2005 Mr Evers received a telephone call from a man name Bob Waterer, a distant(now deceased) cousin unknown to Mr Evers at that point.
Bob relayed that after selling his and his sister’s properties to developers, he had discovered documents in the back of his deceased sisters closet that indicated Bob Waterer had distant Aboriginal Ancestry. This discovery by Bob Waterer made the local news in this sleepy part of the world.
Bob Waterer discovers parent’s birth certificates.
As detailed on the Manly Warringah Pittwater Aboriginal Support Group, Bob Waterer was 81 years old, when he discovered documents in his late sister’s house that showed his Aboriginal heritage. A book was soon to follow.
Bob Waterer phoned every cousin he could find to share to news of his discovery. Laurie Bimson and Neil Evers, both grandparents who had lived their entire lives as privileged non-Aboriginal people received phone calls from Bob Waterer, and were thus informed that they may have had an Aboriginal Ancestor they were completely unaware of.
Bimson was 57, and Evers was 67, both having lived full lives as non-Aboriginal People, has had their parents, and grandparents before them.
With great enthusiasm Laurie Bimson and Neil Evers embraced their newly discovered ancestry, and began exploring who their Ancestors were, and just what it meant to ‘be Aboriginal.’ Unfortunately these grown Adult Men were so ignorant of genuine Aboriginal Values, Culture, Knowledge etc they fell easy prey to Tracey Howie and Warren Whitfield’s Guringai Cult, created only a handful of years earlier.
Gobbling down Whitfield’s pseudo-Aboriginal hodgepodge hook, line and sinker, these distant possible descendants of Aboriginal People were suddenly emboldened to pronounce themselves with vaguely Aboriginal adornments and titles, and to start dictating to others, including actual Aboriginal People, that they had Cultural Knowledge and standing in the Aboriginal Community.
That’s why these quite clearly non-Aboriginal people claim to be Elders, Uncles, Aunties, Bloodline Custodians etc.
They were fooled by non-Aboriginal charlatans, and were/are not Culturally equipped to see through the fiction, despite their long lives of White privilege.
The great irony is that there are Aboriginal descendants of Bungaree and Matora. We were not tricked into joining the GuriNgai, as we already know who and what we are, already have language, Culture, Stories, know where we came from, and where we are going.
We recognised Tracey Howie and Warren Whitfield for what they are on sight, and remain saddened and disappointed that some of our distant non-Aboriginal relatives can not. Still I spent considerable time and expense unravelling this confusedly bizarre mess to uncover just what was going on.
I remain steadfast in my view that had Evers and Bimson any Cultural understanding whatsoever, they would not have, could not have, been so easily hoodwinked by the claims of non-Aboriginal People such as Warren Whitfield and Tracey Howie.
Neil Evers and Laurie Bimson’s every action laid out in A Long Con, Gone On Too Long, demonstrate how far they are from grasping even the fundamental basics of what it means to be an Aboriginal Person.
How they continue to recklessly disregard the great shame they are causing their families, even their very distant Aboriginal Family, their communities and all Australia, remains beyond me.
Please stop, just stop.
Own up or shut up, just please stop embarrassing yourselves even further.

It seems that in 2017, Uncle Neil Evers may have been contemplating jumping ship as former GuriNgai director Dennis Foley had only a handful of years earlier.
Fortunately the ‘jumping’ is a metaphor only, and the gentleman did not actually have to shift their body in the slightest, only the name they decided to call the area around it.
